Did you know that all lighting and power circuits are to be protected by a Safety switch? Well, to add to this, from 2021, all new air conditioning, hot water, ovens and cooktop circuits are also required to be protected by a Safety switch, even if they’re a hard-wired device.

This is for your own safety. Safety switches measure the potential difference between the active and neutral currents. If there is a difference, the RCD (residual current device, technical term) will assume the excess current (amps) is going to Earth or Earth via You. When this happens, it will trip power within 30ms and potentially save your life.

Check your switchboard and make sure you have a circuit breaker in there with a button on it. It's a good idea to push the button every 6 months. This is a self-test of the safety switch and will ensure it is working correctly in case a real fault occurs.
